Secreted in some of the remotest areas of the world lie the crumbling records of a forgotten civilisation, though most of the keepers are unable to decipher the meaning of their treasure. India, that ancient seat of learning and philosophy, has a share of the sacred records of this civilisation, from which all races of man are believed to have sprung.
In 1868 James Churchward, a young officer in the British Army, was becoming fascinated by the temples and relics and by intimations of the ancient knowledge to be learnt in that mysterious land. He was befriended by an old and learned High Priest, who taught him the long dead Naga-Maya language ("naga" means "serpent" both in Sanskrit and the ancient Mayan language). Together they started to decipher the store of clay tablets that lay in the forgotten, dust-filled rooms of the Priest's temple, and an amazing story began to unfold. They learned that 50,000 years ago there had existed a great civilisation centred on a land mass which once linked all the South Sea islands, and now lies under the Pacific Ocean. This continent was MU, the Motherland, The Empire of the Sun.
This Knowledge inspired James Churchward to examine the existing records and ruins in many other parts of the world, and in a lifetime spent on this study he found corroborative evidence that the earliest roots of all the known civilisations of the ancient world did in fact have a common origin. One of the richest sources of corroboration was to be found in the valley of Mexico where, during the 1920's, William Niven had discovered over 3,000 stone tablets carved with symbols and figures which were unlike anything that had been discovered elsewhere. To the professional archaeologists they were an enigma, but to Churchward they were a book that he eagerly read, and these discoveries prompted him to write the first of his four books on MU, The Lost Continent of Mu. Not only in Mexico, but from sources in all parts of the world, came confirmatory evidence. Throughout thousands of years colonists had left MU to found new offshoots of civilisation on many other land masses, all owing allegiance to the Motherland.
They took with them science and religion of MU and continued to teach the sacred knowledge even after a cataclysmic upheaval of the earth had sunk MU below the waves. The descendants of these colonists were the inhabitants of the early civilizations whose traces have remained buried until the archaeologists' excavations. Across the world on every continent from the Americas to lost Atlantis and Egypt, and from India to Mongolia and Africa, Churchward traces the remains of the colonies of MU, in his second book The Children of MU.
Recent research has not disproved Churchward's findings, but in a curious manner, as yet unrecognised and unremarked by the archaeologists themselves, it has gone some way to confirming the basis of his ideas. The similarity between the Ziggurats of Babylon in Asia, and the stepped Pyramids of Mexico and Peru is too well known to need comment. Methods of quarrying, tools and techniques, and building with huge blocks of stone in both the old world and the new are seen to be identical, as are methods of hillside terracing and irrigation for cultivation. Other similarities have been found in the practice of mummification, widely used in South America though not with the finesse developed by the Egyptians. Burying the dead with masks of gold occurred in Peru as well as in Phoenecia and Mycenae. Vertical and horizontal looms used in Peru have been found identical with those used in Egypt. Since the days of Churchward, sculptured heads of great antiquity have been unearthed in Mexico, carved with Negroid faces of strength and dignity. Other tomb carvings depict men with Assyrian profiles and curly beards, this among the Indians of the Mexico peninsula who as a race were virtually beardless.
The correspondences between South America and Mediterranean area and the Pacific Islands are no less fascinating. Any visitor to the British Museum can see among a collection of objects from Hawaii a perfectly-shaped Alexandrian Greek helmet complete with crest, made entirely from wicker-work. The same design of helmet was worn by Peruvian warriors and appears on Mochica pottery from that area. Further along the same gallery can be seen Pan pipes from the Solomon Islands, also used in Peru and Colombia and the islands of the New Hebrides. In the west the pipes are associated with the Greek god Pan.
The New Hebrides collection also has three interesting skulls showing the practice of head-deformation. Newly-born infants had flat boards fastened to their heads, front and sides, so the skull was elongated upwards and backwards. Although the archaeologists consider this was simply a cosmetic practice, it was originally likely to have had a use in mystical practices of mind expansion, to achieve results similar to trepanning (See GG issue No.5). Skulls deformed this way are found throughout Polynesia, in the Near East among the Armenoids, in Peru and among the Mayas of Mexico.
Churchward had very little of this research available to confirm his ideas, but when he wrote The Lost Continent of MU there were many enigmatic ruins and symbols scattered across the world that could, for someone with an open mind and time and energy to travel, provide links in the chain reaching back to MU. In The Children of MU he mentions that Dr. Schliemann, in his excavations of the lost city of Troy, found a vase with an owl design and a sphinx figure with a bird's head, both with an inscription from King Chronos of Atlantis. He noted similarities between the monumental ruins of Baalbek in Asia Minor and those stretching across the Pacific Islands to Mexico and Peru. The same symbols recurred across the world from the four forces Swastika of the Hindus, which was also used by the American Mound Builders, the Mayas of Mexico, and appears on the Pedra Pintada (a huge, prehistoric, carved rock in North-East Brazil), as well as the use of the Lotus Flower symbol in the Far East and in Egypt. The long prevalent idea, that earlier men were isolated groups, struggling in ignorance and unaware that they lived on a globe that was a small unit of a vast universe, is now seen to be fallacious. At the height of their development the ancient civilisations had worldwide communication, and complete realisation of the micro-macrocosmos. How then does Churchward account for the archaeologists' theory that man has struggled up from savagery to his present level? The evidence in various artifacts such as flint and stone tools, of which the earliest are the crudest. Paradoxically he states that their very crudity shows that their makers were likely to be civilised but unskilled in the handmaking of tools, skill being acquired with many generations of experience. Just think for a moment, how we would fare, if a worldwide holocaust were to devastate the planet, leaving groups of survivors amid a world of smoking rubble? Is it not conceivable that our efforts at chipping stone arrowheads would be labelled by future archaeologists as very early, primitive man?
The origin of life was perfectly understood by the scientists of the earth's first great civilisation, says Churchward in the Cosmic Forces of MU. Both the ancient Naacal writings and the Mexican stone tablets make prominent mention of the life force. They say that in the beginning the world was inorganic. The planet Earth used the natural forces, over aeons of time, to change the inorganic into the basic organic elements of life. The Earth's latent volcanic forces shattered the cooling rocks. The sun, the rain, and the wind eroded them. The basic chemicals to form life were released. Then certain proportions of elementary matter were combined in a chemical compound. These elementary compounds were brought together, chemically joined, and balanced by the correct volume of the planet's life-force. The inorganic became organic, it became the seed of life, a Cosmic Egg.
This life-force is absorbed into our bodies through the air we breathe, is distributed by our blood, and provides the motive power that keeps our atoms spinning and vibrating. When the force is exhausted, the carriers of the force, which the microscopically revolving worlds called ziis, are carried off from the body through the pores of the skin. The scientists of MU found that the greater the volume of life force present the simpler was the life form that it could sustain. The life force has been gradually lowered in volume, both in the atmosphere and in the earth during the cooling of the planet's crust and has enabled more complex forms of life to develop. The ratio of life force to the earth's temperature was finally reached when the planet went into final magnetic balance. This occurred at the end of the Tertiary era, during which age, according to Churchward, man first appeared on this planet.
As the earliest life forms died out, because of the changing planetary conditions, the chemical compounds were reformed with new additional elements, and the lowering volume of life force caused a more complex form of life to appear, and prevented the older life form from continuing. This is not evolution, which Churchward says is an impossibility, a simple form of life cannot evolve into a more complex one, and there is no missing link between apes and mankind. This is not to deny that animals and man can make modifications to suit their environment. The early horses of the Eocene period had feet similar to the wading birds of the present day because they lived on soft, marshy ground. As the ground hardened during the Miocene and Pliocene periods, the foot gradually formed into the hoof that we see today. Such modifications are external and do not affect the elementary compounds of the animals. They neither simplify nor complicate it.
If evolution were a fact it would show in the rock strata between the Cretaceous and the Tertiary eras. The first was the age of the giant reptiles, Tyrannosaurus and Triceratops. The second, which geologically speaking followed in a comparatively short time, was the age of small mammals and the first horses. There is no sign in any strata of an evolutionary link between the two forms of life.

This symbolises the four great primary forces issuing directly from the central creator. Each force has an arrowhead showing activity from west to east indicating the circular motion which occurs throughout the universe. The four forces as manifest in our solar system are:
1. A propelling force from the Sun to carry the Earth along her orbit.
2. A repellant force from the Sun to prevent the Earth being pulled into the Sun.
3. An attractive force from the Sun to prevent the Earth from flying out of the Solar System.
4. A magnetic force from the Earth that has an affinity with forces 1 and 3.
This last force is different for each planet, and enables them to maintain their respective orbits around the Sun.
By the end of the Tertiary era our sun's forces had drawn so much of the earth's forces from her thin crust in the polar region that the pole was pulled over to an unsafe degree. When the polar surface was demagnetised, the pull of the sun was no longer effective, and the planet swung back on her axis, due to the gyroscopic force. This swing caused huge tidal waves and mountains of shattered ice to sweep across the face of the planet. The ensuing devastation wiped out whole continents and civilisations and was the foundation of the Biblical flood story, of which versions occur in many mythologies across the world. Magnetic cataclysms have happened a number of times in the earth's early history, and they were understood and written of by the scientist priests of 25,000 years ago. Since then, the planet's crust has thickened and compacted and so the storage capacity for her forces has increased. Since the last magnetic flip, the forces stored in the earth's crust are sufficient to meet all the demands of the sun.
One centre of civilisation which was wiped out, during the last cataclysm, was that of the Uighurs in Central Asia. The high wall of water swept over their fertile land and left what we now know as the Gobi Desert. As the mountain of water rolled northwards, the Siberian Mammoths and other animals who lived on the plains were carried along, and their bodies were finally deposited in bulk in the Arctic Ocean, Today their bones and tusks form an island called Lyakovs Island.
THE EVOLUTION OF THE SWASTIKA
The Swastika is a Sanskrit word which means "Well Being", and the Swastika has always been known as a good luck symbol. It was used in ancient times in many parts of the world, and has been found in Hindu carvings, in South American rock carvings and on Central American Mound Builders' pottery. James Churchward has traced its evolution through the tablets he found in India. His interpretation is:
1. This is the original figure symbolising the Four Great Primary Forces.
2. Shows the Four Forces are contained within the Creator.
3. The arms are extended and bent to show that the Forces move from west to east.
4. Here the symbol of the Creator is removed, enabling the Forces to be written of without including the Creator.
The final submersion of MU occurred some 12,000 years ago and was caused by the blowing out of the natural volcanic gas chambers, which were situated below the surface of the continent. These chambers of gas were formed when the planet was cooling and solidifying and they cross the whole of the globe in a network that is from about one to eighteen miles below the surface. The routes that these gas belts take across the world, as shown in Churchward's maps in The Children of MU, have a close relationship to present-day seismic maps showing the world's earthquake activity. With a series of tremendous earthquakes and volcanic explosions, the cities of MU were reduced to rubble. When the compressed underground gases had escaped, the roofs of the gas chamber upon which the continent rested were no longer strong enough to sustain the weight above. The land caved into the depths below and the waters of the ocean rushed over the shattered remains. Most of the 64 million inhabitants were lost, those who survived were stranded on isolated and overcrowded islands, scattered across the vast ocean, where once had been the mighty land of MU. Overnight they were plunged from the heights of a sophisticated civilisation to the depths of bare primitive existence. This, says Churchward, was the cause of savagery and the start of cannibalism in the world. It is a disquieting thought to remember that today, technologists in their incessant desire for more of our planet's natural resources and wealth, are at present tapping the natural gas chambers around the coasts of this island, Britain, as well as in many other parts of the world.
The symbol of the construction and workings of the Sun.
This symbol was found on a Mound Builder's water jar in Mississippi County U.S.A. It shows that the Sun has a hard crust and a soft centre and that the Sun is being revolved by her superior Sun from west to east. The revolving crust carries around the molten centre in the same direction, but not at the same velocity, thus forming a frictional line, a magnet. Drawing the molten centre as four arms was one of the earliest symbols of the Four Great Forces.*******
During his researches at the Buddhist Temple of Lhasa, in Tibet, Dr. Henry Schliemann discovered and translated an ancient record that threw light upon the last days of MU. Part of it reads thus:
"When the star of Bal fell on the place where now is only the sky and the sea, the seven cities with their golden gates and transparent temples, quivered and shook like leaves in a storm; and, behold, a flood of fire and smoke arose from the palaces. Agonies and cries of the multitude filled the air. They sought refuge in their temples and citadels, and the wise MU - the Hieratic RA-MU - arose and said to them, 'Did I not predict all this?' And the women and the men in their precious stones and shining garments lamented, 'MU, save us,' and MU replied, 'You shall all die together with your servants and your riches, and from your ashes new nations shall arise. If they forget they are superior not because of what they put on but what they put out the same will befall them'. Flames and smoke choked the words of MU; the land and its inhabitants were torn to pieces and swallowed up by the depths."
MU perished because her people ignored and forgot the reason for their incarnation on this planet Earth. The original teachings and sacred knowledge, which Churchward had discovered in the ancient tablets, was, in later ages, replaced with excessively materialistic thoughts. Thought vibrations are a most potent force and have far-reaching effects on the physical plane. Every Avatar who has incarnated on planet Earth has taught: "As you sow, so shall you reap".
This Cosmic Law works at many levels, from that of individual Karma to that of the World's Karma. And the very fabric of our physical world depends upon the thought vibrations emitted by the collective inhabitants of this world. The thought vibrations of the populace of MU had descended to such a low pitch that they were no longer sufficient to maintain the structure of their material world. And so MU perished. Now, once again, powerful empires hold dominion over this planet. All are encouraged to seek ever more material satisfactions, and most are unaware of why they are here. The inner earth rumbles and eruptions increase, and the seismologists chart the fault lines with growing apprehension.
THE SEVEN-HEADED SERPENT
"Originally the Universe was only spirit. All was without form and without life. All was calm, silent and soundless. Void and dark was the immensity of space. Only the Supreme Spirit, the Seven-Headed Serpent, moved within the abyss of darkness." --- James Churchward's translation of the Oriental Naacal tablets.
The religious teachings of MU were inevitably bound up with its scientific knowledge, and contained the highest principles of which we can conceive today. Whereas archaeologists tend to assume that early man worshipped idols, fetishes and animals, Churchward affirms that they possessed a complete philosophy which was taught in stages, dependent on the individual's development. Man was taught that there was a Supreme Being, infinite and all-powerful, and that man was created by this Almighty Being who had placed within his body an eternal spirit. They understood that the body would return to the earth from which it was taken and the spirit would return to the world beyond - there to wait until it was called upon to occupy another material body. He was taught that the spirit had the task of ruling the material body by overcoming material desires, and as one physical life is so short it was necessary that his spirit return in many different bodies, until the task of that spirit had been accomplished. Only then would his spirit return to a Great Source. He was given precepts for his behaviour to his fellow men, who had all been created as he, and were therefore his brothers. Those who were most advanced were initiated into the Sacred Mysteries which temporarily released the spirit from the prison of flesh and gave them experience of physical death and the state of future being. They returned to this world with uncommunicable knowledge and a profound desire to attain the realms of everlasting life. This was the pure simple religion that at later ages was corrupted and perverted by the priesthood who desired power and wealth. And the dregs of this corruption have been unearthed in many parts of the world, where archaeologists have found the worship of idols and animals and human sacrifice.
Scientific knowledge has fared no better since those ancient times, and possibly worse. Men were first taught their place in the Creator's great conception and not until this was fully assimilated, and lived, were they given knowledge of the Cosmic Forces which permeated the universe and could be used by man when he was universally attuned. These forces cause the planets to spin on their axes and to move in their orbits around the sun. As the sun radiates an attractive force and a repulsive force, whose ratio of intensities varies according to their distance from the sun, neutral zones are formed wherein the planets are held in their orbits, neither able to fall toward the sun nor fly out of the solar system. All living celestial bodies, as are the earth and the sun, contain a molten core and a hard crust. The core revolves at a slower rate than the crust and the ensuing friction generates the forces, which are stored in the hard crust until required. The sun does not emit heat, it is a cool body, but it sends to earth rays which first draw from the earth's crust the affinitive rays, and then the sun's rays catalytically animate certain molecules in the atmosphere and the resulting friction produces heat. As the sun rises above the eastern horizon its forces draw out the forces of the earth against the resistance of the earth's great Central Magnet, thereby producing a rotation. As the forces become exhausted they are no longer attracted to the sun, and during the second half of the day they lie dormant in the atmosphere and are redrawn into the earth's crust during the hours of darkness to be regenerated.
Just as the sun keeps the planets on their axes and moving in their orbits and enables them to produce their forces so is there a vaster sun, at an incalculable distance in space, that governs the movements of our own sun and causes it to produce the forces which enable earth to be our mother. The vibratory rates of the forces emitted by this huge dark body are so high that the earth and planets are unaffected by them.
Here we find a cosmic concept of beauty and dignity, with counteracting and balancing forces embracing the whole universe. A universe in which mankind is not a biological sport but an integral part of the Creator's concept, with a definite purpose which he will eventually fulfil.
It was not by chance that James Churchward was led to spend a lifetime searching out the ancient knowledge of a forgotten civilisation. He was a man a century ahead of his time, and it is now when the spiritual soul-seekers of this tortured age have turned from the arid futility presented by twentieth century religion and science, that the significance of his discoveries is becoming apparent. The sacred knowledge of MU was obtained by meditation upon the highest concepts.
"The books from which the ancients learnt the highest lessons are with us today, and at our disposal. Will we learn to read them? Have the Gods given us the skill? I shall answer. We have the power to attain the skill. It rests with ourselves to do so."

******* ******* The dates quoted by Churchward, such as a civilisation existing 50,000 years ago with 200,000 years of development, have usually been considered as belonging to the realms of fantasy. But there is no doubt that certain objects have at times appeared inside rock strata which give them an extraordinary ancient dating. In the last century in a sandstone quarry in Scotland steel nails were found embedded inside the stone. We know steel as a very recent development, but the geological dating of the formation of the sandstone placed it at 200 million years old. Similarly in a limestone quarry in North England strands of gold thread were found inside the stone, this was dated at 100 million years old. In 1851 in New England, U.S.A., during rock blasting a small vessel shaped like a bell was recovered from the debris. The body appeared to be made of zinc or something similar and was covered with silver inlay of flowers and vines. The stone this was recovered from was dated at about 20,000 to 10,000 years old. Coal strata have yielded some enigmatic finds too. Ranging from reports of skeletons of men who were eight feet tall in Italy to the famous Salzburg Cube: this is a two-inch cube of meteoritic nickel-iron, a form of steel. Two opposing faces are slightly convex and it is circled by a deep cleanly machined groove. It has been exhaustively examined and has been pronounced as definitely manufactured. This was recovered from miocene coal strata, 26 to 12 million years old. (Shades of 2001?) It is now in the museum at Salzburg.
