An Index
to M.R. James's Eton and King's

(Frontispiece to Eton and King's)

Anyone who owns a copy of M.R. James's memoirs, Eton and King's: Recollections, Mostly Trivial (Williams & Norgate, 1926), will probably be aware of the fact that it has no index. Having become frustrated with the time we wasted trying, and often failing, to find a particular reference or section in the volume, we finally decided to create the missing index. Originally it was intended for our own use, but we quickly realised that it would be of value to anyone who has occasion to refer to the book.

Readers of Eton and King's will notice that MRJ often mentions people by their surnames alone. We have done our best to discover the missing forenames (or initials, at least) and to fill in other gaps, but some have remained elusive. Help on these and suggestions for any other omissions (or errors) will be gratefully received.

Eton and King's is a very entertaining and highly readable work with many amusing - even laugh-out-loud - moments. As a reviewer in The Times (November 12, 1926, p.20) put it, the book is "not one to describe but to chuckle over". It has been criticised for its failings as an autobiography (e.g. R.W. Pfaff's "extremely enjoyable... [but] so sadly deficient as autobiography"). However, compared with the memoirs of MRJ's brother Sydney, Seventy Years: Random Reminiscences and Reflections, published in the same year, it's a treasure-trove of personal details. Sydney's book is an extremely dull and dry read, brightened only by a funny anecdote about Sir James (Golden Bough) Frazer and a charmingly endearing description of Sydney's absent-minded wife. The one thing, though, which Seventy Years does have, and which MRJ's volume doesn't, is an index. Until now...
